Sometimes we are called for a time of separation. It gives us space to experience God in a fresh way, away from the direct influences of those who know us too well and may have an unknown influence upon our activities and responses.

So Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negeb. Genesis 13:1 (ESV)

In being where God would lead us we are more vulnerable to Him. In the desert region we can come to a dependence and hopefully a healthy relationship with the provider.
